Review of iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus – the glass is again in vogue

On September 12, Apple introduced the long-awaited new generation of iPhone, whose representatives were named iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and … iPhone X, this time the company decided not to use the "S" line. Although we will see iPhone X (or iPhone 10 as you like) not earlier than November, you can get acquainted with iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus even now, as both smartphones appeared in our editorial office – traditionally much earlier than the official start of sales in Russia.

We will move away from the usual format of the review and will not talk about the box and bundling – here, in comparison with the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, there are absolutely no changes, the same EarPods with the charger and the Lightning cable. Separately, I would like to note the innovation in iOS 11, with which you can configure a new iPhone from another via Wi-Fi – this is the first smartphone that supports such a function "out of the box." It is enough to place the devices side by side, enter the necessary passwords and get a literal copy of your previous smartphone. That's how it looks:

Let's remove the protective films from the novelties soon and take a look at them in more detail.

Glass is again in vogue

After the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4s, Apple refused to use glass as a back panel material. It is not surprising, since this part of smartphones was almost the most fragile and constantly broken up – though not on splinters, but it looked ugly. The new generation iPhone again became glass: the back panel of iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus is covered with glass – according to Apple, this is the most durable glass used in smartphones, to date. We are sure that enthusiasts will soon verify this.

About the glass is to talk at least for the reason that this is one of the main visual differences between the new products from the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. First, hold on to the glass back panel unusually, and then remember the sensations of aluminum and come to at least two conclusions: the iPhone "in the glass" does not constantly try to slip out of the hand, this material is generally more pleasant to the touch, less affected by the ambient temperature. In winter, the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus were difficult to take comfortably with a bare hand – aluminum became so cold. Glass, however, collects fingerprints on cheers – it's worse, perhaps, things are only for the iPhone 7 in color "black onyx."

Actually, the glass panel is the main culprit of the fact that the new iPhone has become thicker and heavier. iPhone 8 at 10 grams heavier and 0.2 mm thicker than its predecessor, the iPhone 8 Plus – 14 grams heavier, the difference in thickness is the same. At first this difference is noticeable not so much visually as by sensations, then you get used to it, because the difference is actually minimal.

The side frames of iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus have remained aluminum, their color and back panel correspond to the chosen color of the smartphone. Although due to the use of glass the rear panel has clearly become a bit dimmer.

Otherwise, it's all the same iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus: round button "Home", 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch IPS-display respectively, front camera, speaker grille and a standard set of sensors. So if you look at the front panel of the new iPhone, you can hardly distinguish them from their predecessors. And if you put on a case, no one will know that you bought an iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus.

Bionic is the power

The main differences lie in the hardware, although here you can find much in common with the G-7. The main innovation is the A11 Bionic processor, which is exactly what is installed in the iPhone X. As Apple representatives said at the presentation, this processor can be faster than the A10 installed in the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, almost by 70%. It was difficult to verify whether it was really that way, but we tried: in the resource-intensive games of the novelty there are really noticeable differences in performance, but they are so small that the owners of the iPhone 7 / iPhone 7 Plus are unlikely to notice.

The company's processor is made up of a neural system and a new built-in M11 coprocessor and improved graphics (built into the processor), which is necessary for new smartphones to work with the augmented reality of ARKit. Content with augmented reality is displayed on the Retina HD display, which also became better: resolution and pixel density remained the same (1334 x 750 pixels, 326 pixels per inch for iPhone 8, 1920 × 1080 pixels, 401 pixels per inch for iPhone 8 Plus) , but the new devices added support for True Tone, as in the iPad Pro. With its help, the colors of the display adjust to the ambient light. 3D Touch, if you still remember what it is, also "delivered", as well as the second generation of Touch ID under the display.

As for RAM, its size Apple traditionally does not disclose, but experts have already found out that the iPhone 8 is equipped with 2 GB of RAM, and the iPhone 8 Plus – 3 GB. In this regard, smartphones do not differ from their predecessors.

Camera

If you compare iPhone 8 and iPhone 7, smartphones have identical cameras – they are really the same in characteristics (optical stabilization, 5x digital zoom, aperture ƒ / 1.8, 12 megapixels). The differences are at the level of the processor: A11 Bionic has a built-in chip responsible for image processing, which is able to analyze the elements in the frame – mountains, people, the degree of illumination, and then optimize the shooting depending on what is "seen". Surprisingly faster was the autofocus, HDR – better, and the flash is equipped with the function Slow Sync.

Technically, the cameras of the iPhone 7 Plus and the iPhone 8 Plus are almost the same. The same optical stabilization, dual camera with a resolution of 12 megapixels with wide-angle and telephoto lenses, optical zoom, 10x digital zoom, portrait mode, with which the background blur effect (bokeh) and focus on the subject are performed. The difference lies in the True Tone Quad-LED flash with Slow Sync and portrait lighting, which, however, is still in the beta version.

Portrait lighting includes several styles that can be applied to photographs. "Studio lighting", for example, illuminates the face of the object, and "contour lighting" compares the highlights and shadows to emphasize the details of the person's face in the portrait. Separate attention deserves a "step light" mode – he places his face on a flat black background, looks spectacular. Although the styles can be deleted and changed even after the shot is taken, this is not the Instagram filter. Effects represent a whole symbiosis of hardware image processing in real time and a system installation of two cameras. But for now, we repeat, the function is in the beta testing stage, it does not always work correctly. We are confident that Apple will soon complete the artificial intelligence, which is engaged in data analysis when shooting.

Photos on the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus do get brighter and more juicy, especially if you use the HDR mode. Objects look more detailed, colors – saturated, and the process of shooting is faster, for objects in motion it is very important. Here they are – the wonders of the new processor.

Taken on the main camera iPhone 8 Plus:

Not without innovations and in video recording technology. So, now iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus can shoot 4K-video with a frequency of 60 frames per second, iPhone 7 is able to give a maximum of 30 frames per second. Whether it is useful is incomprehensible; For the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, 64 GB and 256 GB of built-in memory are available, but even this will not be enough to store all 4K video clips. But the "slow" video (Slow-mo) 240 frames per second can now be shot at 1080p, previously there was a maximum of HD (720p). A trifle, but nice. In the rest everything remained unchanged: optical zoom, 6-time digital zoom, frame-by-frame shooting with image stabilization.

The front camera without any changes at all – 7 megapixels, video recording with a resolution of 1080p, aperture f / 2.2.

Now quickly and without wires

Yes, the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus finally got a wireless charging (how long we waited for it – 4 years?). It works with the Qi standard: here Apple decided not to reinvent the wheel and just took advantage of an existing solution that works on many Android-smartphones. On the one hand, it's insulting, they were expecting something revolutionary, on the other hand, the assortment of accessories with Qi support is so great that it will be possible to find a charge for every taste and purse. Especially soon the startup Pi from California should release a device capable of charging the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X at a distance of up to 50 centimeters.

Apple itself in 2018 will release an adapter AirPower, which will be able to charge the iPhone, Apple Watch and the new housing of wireless headphones AirPods. It will look like a large charging platform.

A new generation of iPhone in Apple provided for and quick charging, although here lies a small disappointment – "out of the box" it is not available. For iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus to charge faster than usual, you need to use either an adapter from the MacBook Pro with a USB-C-Lightning cable, or another USB-C power adapter. In this case, smartphones gain 50% of the charge in 30-35 minutes.

On the pleasant

Like the iPhone 7 with the iPhone 7 Plus, the new iPhone is protected from splashing water and dust in accordance with the IP67 standard. Improvements are in terms of video playback – iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus support Dolby Vision and HDR10. By the way, Bluetooth has also been updated: the novelties use technology version 5.0, whereas in the previous generation – 4.2. This means that the Bluetooth chip is characterized by low power consumption, and the connection with the accessories will be even more stable.

As for battery life, it has not changed much – smartphones are able to "live" without a battery approximately the same as the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. It should be noted that the very capacity of the batteries has decreased – hence, Apple has found a way to make smartphones more energy efficient. Good reserve for the future.

Apple Pay, FaceTime and other features of the previous generation iPhone are available and new.

The Verdict

iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are excellent representatives of the new line of smartphones Apple. Perhaps, the number of innovations "does not pull" to skip the traditional "s" prefix, but despite this, these smartphones look attractive to those who have not updated the iPhone for a long time (models 6s and older). Wireless and fast charging, a new camera for the iPhone 8 Plus and small improvements – this is enough to replace the "old man" with the novelty. In addition, the glass case evokes nostalgia for the times of the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4s.

But the owners of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus hardly makes sense to upgrade to the new model, unless you were waiting for the appearance of wireless charging (or aluminum suddenly bored). Otherwise, the new items are unlikely to surprise you – although it's worth to "feel" them. Suddenly this is love at first sight?
